Riding Sunbeams is a project by Possible to connect solar panels directly to electrified rail routes to power trains. Never before has solar power been used directly to power to railways, but the project could be hugely beneficial for three main reasons:
1. The positive impact on the environment from using renewable energy
2. The potential to provide a cheaper service to customers
3. A great way to use up the space surrounding railway lines which is hard to use for anything else.
A demonstrator project, funded by the Department for Transport and Innovate UK, was the first globally to connect solar energy directly into Direct-Current. The project has received further funding to both develop and demonstrate the required technology to connect solar energy and line-side energy storage to feed an Alternating-Current overhead-wire railway.
